Sustainability in action: Our “5 to Drive” commitment

At Stretton Shires School, sustainability is more than a goal—it is part of our everyday culture. Through our “Sustainability 5 to Drive” initiative, we are empowering staff and pupils to make simple, meaningful choices that reduce our environmental impact and help protect the planet for future generations.

We believe that small actions today can make a big difference tomorrow. By focusing on five key areas, our school community is working together to create a greener, more sustainable future.

  1. Energy – Power Down

Saving energy is one of the simplest ways to reduce our carbon footprint. Staff and pupils are encouraged to switch off lights, screens, and electronic devices at the end of each day and during holiday periods. These small habits help conserve energy and reduce unnecessary waste.

  1. Reducing Single-Use Plastics

We are committed to cutting down on single-use plastics across the school. Refillable water bottles are encouraged for both staff and pupils, helping to reduce plastic waste while promoting sustainable daily practices. Our message is simple: Refill. Reuse. Refuse.

  1. Carpooling Where Possible

Transportation contributes significantly to carbon emissions. By encouraging car-sharing and carpooling, we can reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and make journeys more environmentally friendly. Sharing the ride benefits both our community and the planet.

  1. Reuse and Recycle

Creativity and sustainability go hand in hand. We actively promote the reuse and recycling of teaching resources, materials, and everyday items wherever possible. By giving resources a second life, we reduce waste and maximise their impact.

  1. Print with Purpose

We are mindful of our paper consumption and encourage staff to print only when necessary, e.g. for supporting ASD-friendly communication and learning. Whenever possible, digital alternatives are used to reduce unnecessary printing and paper waste.

Working Together for a Greener Future

Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and every member of our school community plays an important role. Through the “5 to Drive” initiative, we are fostering positive habits that support environmental stewardship and inspire lasting change.

Together, we can reduce our environmental impact, make more sustainable choices, and demonstrate that every small action counts.

Together, we drive change. Together, we protect our planet. 🌍💚
